log8_11: data isn't permanent

data isn't permanent (broken hard drive).data will corrupt (corrupted image). data will be lost (error message). tech will not be durable (scratched CD). tech will decay (old desktop setup sitting in a landfill). tech will be obsolete (thumb with a usb-a drive & two usb-c ports).

this isn't an update post but more thoughts and blabbers. i conducted a survey relating to online identity & digital footprints with one question relating to thinking about your footprint after death. one answer struck me:

"Eventually services will be closed, websites will be shut down, and my last traces will vanish away."

it reminded me that data isn't that permanent and how oblivion is inevitable for all, especially for ones and zeros. digital obsolence can take many forms. data can be lost or corrupted all of a sudden. the hardware may get destroyed or decay over time as the components and materials break down. tech we use today can just become obsolete because apple or microsoft feel like making it obsolete for what feels like no reason. climate change can also be a factor as servers in london were temporarly shut down to the extreme heatwaves. this mean companies with big server farms holding our data will have to think about locations due to rising temperatures and sea levels. the internet is also fragile as travels through cables on the ocean floors and are prone to shark attacks.

my elderly guidance teacher in high school warned us about how if we post a pic online then its there forever. for her age, the internet is probably still new to her while it's my whole life. while our data may be transferred form one server farm to another, nothing can be ever permanent except the elements and atoms that we are composed of.

in regards to progress: progress is moving. animation takes time afterall. for a song to leave you on, here's j-pop singer Chara's "Bokuni Utsushite" (Move to Me). beautiful voice. japanese feels satisfying when it is sung like with italian or spanish. this was co-written with James Iha of The Smashing Pumpkins which you can hear elements of in this.
