a blog about masters misadventures by cherri.

the end.

hey there! i abandoned this blog after semester 2 heh.it has been a wild few months that have paid off in the end luckily. apologies for lack of updates in recent months

may was rough for me dealing with both illness and loss and i had to walk away from the film for a bit before i forced myself kicking and screaming to finish the film. gray's undergrad show alongside the new zelda and spider-verse film helped rejuvinate me creatively. favourites from the undergrad show inclided jessica reid, robert gamble, karthik sunil and lewis church from comdes and jodie jeen and beth edgar from painting.

mid-june-late july was spent finishing the film. one week i spent in the mac lab @ gha rendering the 3D portions and then spent weeks polishing and colouring the 2D parts. the post-production process came pretty swiftly luckily and was able to complete the film start of august. i also worked on marketing and branding which i managed to finalise for this film. the space for the show was also selected based from my first impressions luckily as i prioritsed clear acoustics and having a isolated space for viewing.

august then saw the completion of my dissertation. despite it being my final piece of academic writing in my life and not being as heavy as my undergrad, i am very happy to not have to write like this again alongside the frustrations of word processors crapping themselves in regards to image layout. as a treat, i am releasing it online for anyone to peek click here. after that came prepping for the show. i would to thank Gray's AV wizard Joost, malcom from the workshop and the technical team who have did the hard and dangerous work in setting up the space alongside my course leader Jon for printing the posters. i kept my space dark yet simple and clean besides the posters in/out my space to so that my film is the central focus. i replicated the cinema/home theatre experience as much as i could in Gray's.

the show opened 25th august with the opening night. upon arriving at Gray's, i was informed about winning the RGU Art & Heritage Purchase Award for my film which was a welcome surpise and am honoured to receive. the turnout on the opening night was stellar. unfortunately, i got sick within the week and was not at gray for most except for the final few days where turnout was still strong. i got to show the film to friends and family but strangers seeing my work aswell is one of those things that makes being a filmmaker so rewarding, moreso than money. it was great to see everyone else's work on display. everyone in the MA had their own lane and style whether it be Ronnie Wood's comics and films, Gill Flett's amazing sculpture work (Gill has been my studiomate throughout this last year and am lucky to own several pieces of her's), Sarah MacFarlane's vibrant paintings, Zara Deary's massive paintings, Carla Angus' expansive in-progress work, Nicole Pattinson's familial photography, Bart Grabski's in-your-face curation, Yara Diab's reflective installations, Christine Fleming's fun interactive installations and Hannah Cutt's delicate illustrations. My fellow ComDes comrades Julia Poeppelmann, Cat Clarke and Beric Sharpe having stellar design work with inclusive forward-thinking messages revolving around combating misogyny surrounding whiskey, the sustainabilty of print and the euphoria queer love. This diversity spread throughout made our show energetic. the graduate-in-residence show as well provided excellent work from the GiRs. Shoutout to Rod Milne, who was very enthiusiastic to see me and my film and I had a lengthy conversation with opening night. getting our results was added to a great week as I was awarded MA with Distinction after putting in many hours to make this film.

the last year at Gray's has seen me grow as a creative and a person. getting to surround myself with other creatives and the freedom and space to pursue a project like ob-SOUL-1337 was phenomonal. taking down my work this past Saturday was quite bittersweet

with this, my last 5 years at RGU have come to an end. not writing off the possibilty of returning for a residency or coming back as a lecturer 10 years from now but for now, it's time to say goodbye (except maybe some short classes and show visits). it was fun but i'm ready for the future. i'm doing a lil illustration to cap off my time at RGU which you can find online soon. to play this blog off, it's ghosts from yeule. it feels fitting for end credits and the blend of emo/electronica and themes of ghosts feel analogous to my film. this also marks the end of my MA blog, hope you enjoyed reading. please check out the links at the footer to see where i am after this blog is published.

the end.
